Hitachi's new smartphone display offers 4.5 inches of 3D

Hitachi announced a new smartphone display this week that is capable of displaying 3D content without requiring the user to wear 3D glasses. The new display features a large, 4.5-inch size, and has a higher resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels than we have seen from previous 3D displays for smartphones.

Hitachi says the new display has a higher quality image than previous generations thanks to a new lenticular lens array. The new display is based on IPS technology and features 400 cd/m2 brightness in 2D mode or 470 cd/m2 brightness when in 3D mode.

The new screen can be used in portable TVs, cellphones, or handheld gaming devices. No word on when it will be available in devices on the market

The best Smartphone in World

If you are looking to invest in a smartphone maker, your choices at first seem limited to Apple and a bevy of also-rans that are taking turns auditioning for the dubious distinction of becoming the next Palm.

Shares of Motorola Mobility (MMI), maker of the Droid phone and Xoom tablet, have fallen 22%. Nokia (NOK) has plunged 41% this year as investors worry that the Finnish company's partnership with Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) won't reverse the company's earnings and sales woes.

And then there's Research in Motion (RIMM). The Canadian maker of the BlackBerry and PlayBook tablet has lost more than half of its market value (and much of its credibility) this year as one earnings warning after another has investors fleeing for the exits.

But even Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) hasn't had that great of year. The stock is up only about 4%. That leads me to the best-performing smartphone maker, one that you may not be as familiar with because it doesn't trade in the United States: HTC.

HTC is based in Taiwan and trades on Taipei's stock exchange. But shares have been, much like the company's marketing tag line, "quietly brilliant." The stock is up more than 15% this year in Taiwan.

The company has enjoyed strong sales around the world with phones running on Google's (GOOG, Fortune 500) Android operating system. In the U.S., HTC's Thunderbolt 4G phone for Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) has been a particularly big hit.

Motorola's uphill battle

According to a consensus of analysts that follow HTC's Taiwan shares, earnings are expected to increase at an average of nearly 30% a year over the next few years. Compare that to Apple, whose profits are expected to grow at a clip of 21% annually.

Even though HTC has more robust growth prospects, the stock trades for only about 12 times 2011 earnings estimates, a discount to Apple's P/E of about 14 times fiscal 2011 profit forecasts.

So should investors consider trying to cash in on HTC's success? And if so, how?

As fate would have it, HTC is a top holding in a relatively new exchange-traded fund of smartphone stocks: the First Trust NASDAQ CEA Smartphone Index Fund, or FONE (FONE).

That fund tracks a smartphone index which includes a large array of global companies in the mobile device business. In addition to the big smartphone makers, it also owns wireless chip companies, carriers and companies that operate cell phone towers.

But if you are looking for a way to own HTC that's more diverse than a collection of tech and telecom companies, several savvy global-themed mutual funds own the company as well. Two big holders are the Oppenheimer Developing Markets Fund (ODMAX) and Thornburg International Value Fund (TGVAX).

Lei Wang, a portfolio manager with the Thornburg International Value fund in Santa Fe, N.M., said that HTC should be growing more rapidly than Apple right now since the Android operating system is still relatively new compared to Apple's iOS.

HTC shipped about 25 million phones worldwide last year. Wang said that he thinks that number could increase to 100 million within the next two years.

"HTC has done a fantastic job. Nobody had heard of this company in the U.S. three years ago and now the brand is widely recognized," he said.

So the smartphone business isn't just about Apple. And while it's still probably best to steer clear of Nokia, RIMM and Motorola -- which may or may not need to reach out to a savior like Palm did with HP (HPQ, Fortune 500) -- having some exposure to funds that own HTC is a nice way to play the Android trend.

Unlocked iPhone With T-Mobile in USA

We all know that AT&T will soon be acquiring T-Mobile and Apple has shown no signs of bringing iphone to the latter, but this has not stopped the customer from unlocking the iPhone and using it on T-Mobile. T-Mobile USA today reported that more than a million iPhones are currently active on their network, just ahead of the Pepcom event in NYC.

When asked for further details T-Mobile responded by saying that most of the handsets were pre-iPhone 4s mainly because the 3G and 4G data speeds of T-mobile cannot be received on an iPhone 4 due to radio difference between the networks. T-Mobile also does not provide Micro- SIM, so people using an iPhone 4 have to modify their SIM cards into Micro-SIMs. Unlocked iPhone 4s where announced by Apple just a few weeks back but that has not increased the number of iPhone 4 users on T-Mobile because of the above issues.

When asked about availability of Micro SIMs on T-Mobile, they replied by saying that it will be coming shortly maybe after the deal with AT&T is finalized .

Motorola kills MotoBlur due to poor public feedback

Android powered phones are offered by companies like HTC, Samsung, Motorola and a lot of others. People always think that all Android devices are same software-wise, but I don’t agree on it. They are running on the same OS, but what differ them is the custom UI. HTC Sense UI, Samsung TouchWiz UI and not to forget Motorola MotoBlur are some of the custom Android UI’s. MotoBlur is actually the most disliked custom Android UI, and even Motorola agree on it. Motorola is phasing out the name MotoBlur because after getting some feedback from their customers, they came to a conclusion that their customers don’t like it, that’s what Motorola spokesperson told Engadget.



That doesn’t mean it’s dead, only the name is removed and Motorola devices will still feature the Blur features, like we saw on Photon 4G. Photon 4G have some new MotoBlur features, but MotoBlur wasn’t mentioned anywhere. So what actually the story is that Motorola phones will features custom widgets and tweaks, but it will be missing the MotoBlur name. Because Motorola thinks when people hear that the phone is running on MotoBlur, they change their decision before buying it. So they did that for their own good.

Sony Ericsson launch 2 new phones

Sony Ericsson has been running a competition on its Facebook page for the fans to review two of its phone before its official release. Now they have officially unveiled Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman, which is a music phone and Sony Ericsson txt pro with slide out QWERTY keypad.

Both these phones is Wi-Fi enabled and has corner user interface in the home screen, similar to the Xperia mini phones.



The Sony Ericsson Mix Walkman has feature called Zappin that lets you browse through your songs in a new way and comes with karaoke feature while playing the songs. This phone is 14.3mm thick and weighs 88g. It has 3 inch (400 x 240 pixels), 262,144 colour TFT scratch-resistant, capacitive touch screen, 100MB inbuilt memory and expandable external memory up to 32GB, 3.2 MP camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0 prot, FM radio with RDS.

HTC launched the Salsa and ChaCha at Mobile World Congress this year. They are Facebook phones which have a dedicated Facebook key which lets you share your status updates , location, photos etc. from your phone easily. Looks like these devices are finally hitting India as the Salsa which is pretty much the Legend with some extra FB functionality has landed on Flipkart. The Salsa has got a price tag of Rs.20449. Samsungs New Exhibit 4G and Gravity SMART blur the lines between Feature Phones and Smart Phones

Samsung introduces two new devices that spell out the death of feature and dumb phones. When looking at the “evolution” of mobile phones you can see a pretty large divide when looking at the difference between feature phones or dumb phones and growingly popular smart phones. You can narrow this down to performance, perks and price however, gradually these lines that separate these differences are blurring and I’m all for it! On Thursday Samsung introduced two new devices, the Gravity SMART and the Exhibit 4G both of which pack super powers and are priced less than 100 bucks, you know after the whole contract thing. But let’s take a look at these “mid-range” smart phones to get a better idea as to what I’m talking about.



The Samsung Gravity SMART is the Androidification of the uber popular feature line the Gravity. This Samsung Gravity SMART is the first Gravity device running the Android operating system and essentially puts itself in the mid range smart phone category. The Samsung Gravity SMART packs an 800 MHz processor behind its 3.2 inch touch screen and can handle just about anything you throw at it. The Samsung Exhibit 4G sports a 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen display that boasts a 480×800 pixel resolution. The Samsung Exhibit 4G also has a front facing VGA camera for all of your video conferencing needs as well as a 3 mega pixel rear facing camera that can record video as well. You can also expect all the smart phone standards as well, such as WI-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, expandable memory and a universal 3.5 mm headset jack. All in all the Samsung Exhibit 4G is an amazing new affordable smart phone device that can keep up with the higher end smart phones.

Both of these new devices will be made available through T-Mo coming this month and will be priced under one hundred bucks on a new contract. These new devices surely help blur the line between smart phone and dumb or feature phones and I’m all for it. Soon the similar specs will be the standard and the idea of a non smart phone will be laughable. You with me on that? Do these new devices interest you? LG Nexus device

LG is the first brand to launch world’s first dual-core smartphone which is known as LG Optimus 2X and it also got a Guinness World record. Rumors are circulating around from a long time that either LG or HTC is making the next Nexus device which will probably the first one to run Ice Cream Sandwich. We recently showed you a leaked shot of a smartphone which is actually the prototype of next Nexus device, but there was no logo on it so we weren’t able to find out that is it LG or HTC? My guess was HTC because the looks of the device were similar to current HTC devices, but now I am confused because GSMArena spotted an image of LG device, name is unknown but it falls under LG Optimus line, and as you can see the design, there are capacitive buttons instead of physical, which actually matches the design of the prototype we saw. It was posted on a forum by a LG employee, so it’s not a fake image.



It’s not confirmed that it is the next Nexus device and as in the image above, there is also no Google logo and its part of Optimus line. Nexus devices comes with Pure Google experience and they are always under Google. It’s possible that this device is successor to LG Optimus 2X. We don’t know when it’s coming out, but you can expect a launch later this year.

4G on your Motorola LTE Xoom Tablet Soon

Awhile back at that good ol’ 2010 CES convention we got a glimpse at Motorola’s monster phones and the Android tablet everyone was waiting for. The convention brought us the likes of Motorola’s Atrix and its unique webtop application as well as the yet to be released Droid Bionic. Another looker in this group was the highly anticipated and highly acclaimed Motorola Xoom. The Xoom brought it all to the table; it has dual cores, the latest in Android OS and is an all around great experience. Other than its sleek looks and high end specs, the greatest detail was in its 4G or LTE compatibility. That functionality is close at hand.



If you remember the idea of the Motorola Xoom using Verizon’s LTE 4G network was not fully brought into fruition. This was mainly due to the lack of coverage as the network rolled out. Big red’s LTE coverage is spreading like a zombie apocalypse and it seems as if the Motorola Xoom might be ready to get the upgrade it needs. When the Xoom initially went on sale you had the option to upgrade it to 4G in the near future, this would initial you shipping your newly acquired Xoom tablet back to Motorola. Once received by Motorola, they would perform their magical voodoo on the table and viola, your Xoom would be LTE compatible. There has been no real confirmation on when this would start, however an email from a Xoom owner shows the upgrades are under way. A Phandroid.com reader got an email that said this:

“Thank you for submitting your Motorola Xoom for the 4G LTE upgrade. You should have recently received a package in the mail with instructions and materials for returning your device for the upgrade.

Our records indicate that we have not yet received your Motorola Xoom. If you are still interested in upgrading your Motorola Xoom, this is a friendly reminder to please follow the instructions provided in your upgrade package and ship your device back for the upgrade.

If you have already shipped your device back to us, please contact us at 1-800-734-5870 and one of our support specialists will assist you with tracking and completing your order”

So about 6 months later the Xoom will be getting its 4G upgrade, maybe. The user who sent this in to the site, has not actually received the return mailing package and from the looks of it, he is the only user who got the email. This could have easily been sent in error, or Verizon’s LTE will be pumping new life back into the Motorola Xoom.

Motorola Droid Bionic Redesign surfaces showing off a qHD display

Motorola Droid Bionic was announced back at CES 2011 along with Atrix 4G, and Bionic was headed to Verizon Wireless. But then Motorola decided redesign Droid Bionic, and launch it as a completely different device. We recently showed you some leaked shots of Motorola Targa, which is actually codename of redesigned Droid Bionic. We saw a blurry shot back then, but now we finally have some clear shots of the Droid Bionic. The device was leaked twice with interesting shots and information. First batch contains back side images and an image with a laptop dock, as Motorola CEO said that there will be more devices in future with laptop dock functionality. The back side of the device is just like we saw in the image of Targa, but there is no hump like Droid X and Droid X2 on the camera side.



The Motorola Droid Bionic has gotten a slight redesign and seems to be a bit more square around the edges as opposed to its initial more round design. Simply put, the redesigned Droid Bionic seems to be very similar to the leaky Droid 3 and even a bit like the Droid 2. But enough with the comparisons, this is the Droid Bionic. The new leaks confirm the device is using a 4.5 inch qHD display and will be running the latest Android operating system version 2.3.4. The pictures also show off a bit of the devices user interface and exposes new 3D home screens which are a welcome addition to the MotoBlur skinning. These new pictures surely provide hope to anyone waiting on the Bionic to update their mobile lives and with summer right around the corner and Verizon’s LTE in full swing the launch of the Bionic is surely right around the corner. The leaky pictures of the Droid Bionic also show it sporting Webtop functionality with WebTop version 1.3 installed and ready to go. So the only mystery left is when will we get to see this little monster.



While the design of the Droid Bionic may be a bit big for most tastes, the power in which this Bionic will pack can surely make anyone forget about the size. So the leaks of the redesign have hit the airwaves, let’s take bets on launch, I say July. Let us know what you think of the newly designed Droid Bionic from Motorola.



In the second batch, the phone was compared with Atrix 4G and people, new Droid Bionic is really a monster. As you can see the image above, Atrix is like a baby in front of Bionic. Bionic features a 4.5 Inch display, an 8-MP camera with LED flash, and there is also a possibility that it will feature Texas Instruments OMAP4 dual-core processor instead of Tegra 2. It will also a bring a new 3D version of MotoBlur, and it will be running along with Android 2.3.4.

Well folks, that’s all we currently know about the Bionic. The device looks better than the old one I think, and hopefully Verizon will be launching it soon.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 delayed until September

It looks like yesterday’s rumours were true, as the BlackBerry Bold 9900 has been delayed until September.

That’s according to BGR, which claims that ”multiple sources” have confirmed that the Bold 9900 won’t be launching until September globally. This matches up with Clove’s revelation, which suggested that the next-gen Bold won’t be coming until the end of Q3



Although we were hoping it was all just a rumour, it looks like the BlackBerry Bold 9900 won’t be seeing an imminent release – despite RIM‘s promise of a summer landing. The reasons for the hold up still remain a mystery, although we been in touch with the company for further information.

The so-called Bold Touch is the first of the RIM’s handsets to sport a capacitive screen, coupled alongside a full QWERTY keypad. Measuring in at 2.8-inches, the touchscreen display is also the first to showcase RIM’s all-new BlackBerry OS 7, promising a re-jigged UI, a boosted web browser, and BlackBerry Balance. There’s also a 1.2GHz processor, integrated NFC technology, a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with 720p HD video capture, HSDPA and WiFi speeds, and 8GB of built-in storage with microSD expansion.
