New Ford Fiesta for India to use 1.5-litre engines

The 1.6-litre stonker is gone, 1.5-litre mills to provide petrol and diesel options.

A few days back, Ford India’s Michael Boneham told the media that the new Fiesta sedan would boast of class leading fuel efficiency when it goes on sale in India in July 2011. Well, the claim was right, as the Fiesta will return an ARAI-backed fuel economy of up to 17 kmpl and 23.5 kmpl for the petrol and diesel variants respectively.

However, to achieve this, Ford has played around quite a bit with the engines that we got familiar with, with the earlier Fiesta. While the 1.4-litre TDCi diesel engine has now been beefed up in cubic capacity to 1.5-litres, the petrol mill too is set a 1.5-litre capacity, down from its 1.6-litre form that we were absolutely crazy about. The 1.5 Duratorq TDCi mill will put out 91 PS or power and 204 Nm of torque. The 1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT petrol mill on the other hand, will put out 109 PS of power and 108 Nm of torque. While the power and torque outputs of both, the petrol and diesel engines, have gone up compared to their earlier counterparts, it will be interesting to see how the match up to the recently launched Hyundai Verna. The 1.5 litre version of the engine can produce a maximum power of 90 bhp and the torque that the engine can produce is 20.7 kgm. The engines of the car are new and are unique in the market. The petrol version of the car can provide an efficiency of 17kpl and the diesel version of the car can provide an efficiency of 23.5 kpl.
