Bank of America Charge $5 Monthly for Debit Card

Get ready for a new wave of bank fees. Bank of America will begin charging a $5 monthly fee at the beginning of next year for customers who make debit card purchases.

Whether you use your card for one purchase a month or 20, you will pay $5 per month starting in 2012. If you don't use your card at all, you won't be assessed a fee. And you can still use ATMs as much as you want without getting hit with the new fee.

Other banks have been flirting with the idea of introducing a fee for debit card usage, but Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500) is one of the first major institutions to announce that it will make this a reality for all active debit card customers.

The move coincides with the implementation of new rules limiting the revenue banks will be able to get from merchants. Beginning this weekend, a cap on the fees banks can charge retailers every time customers swipe their debit cards will take effect.

While banks used to charge an average fee of 44 cents, now the maximum fee is only 21 cents. This is expected to cost the banking industry billions of dollars. The Federal Reserve introduced the cap this summer, despite protests from many financial institutions.

"The economics of offering a debit card have changed with recent regulations," said Bank of America spokeswoman Betty Riess, adding that customers will be notified of the change at least 30 days before it takes effect.

Best Time To Buy Banking Stocks

If SBI were to fall below 1900, then you can see a sharp cut coming in there. It could actually test 1830 to about 1820. ICICI Bank has the critical support level. At the moment, it is standing at 850 and if it were to fall below 847-843 kind of support area in my chart, I would say that ICICI Bank can fall to another 25 points to something like 820.

Among the other private sector banks, I would say Axis to me looks to be the weakest. If it were to fall below say 1070, then you will see 1050 being breached. I would say that maybe HDFC Bank would be a better choice because it has come close to a major support area around 450 but, one should ideally wait for declines and do not buy into this market thinking that they are big bargains because we have seen that any upswing is not really holding. Amazon unveils $199 Kindle

After months of speculation, it's here: Amazon's tablet, the $199 Kindle Fire, was unveiled Wednesday.

Smaller and cheaper than Apple's dominant iPad, the Kindle Fire has a 7-inch display and runs on a heavily customized version of Google's (GOOG, Fortune 500) Android operating system. The tablet offers Wi-Fi connectivity, but no 3G or other cellular connection. It also lacks a camera and microphone, two features found in most rival tablets.

But the Kindle Fire isn't trying to be an all-in-one computing device. Amazon's focus is on media consumption, like reading books and magazines as well as watching video and streaming music. The tablet includes a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime, the company's $79-a-year service that includes two-day shipping and some free streaming video access.

Priced at less than half the $499 starting price of an iPad, the Kindle Fire aims to undercut Apple's wildly popular tablet, which has sold 28 million units since its 2010 debut. The iPad's momentum is picking up: Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) sold a record 9.3 million iPads in its latest quarter.

Amazon will begin taking Kindle Fire orders on Wednesday, and will start shipping the device on November 15.

"We're making millions of these," Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told the audience at a New York City press conference.

"The price is shockingly low," Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said after the price tag was unveiled. "That's why they went with the smaller screen -- it's cheaper to make."

Rotman Epps previously estimated that Amazon could be the first significant Apple competitor in the tablet market, selling 3 million to 5 million of its tablets this year.

She said Wednesday that she now anticipates sales in the lower end of that range.

"They're not selling until November 15, so that's a little late for the holidays," she said. "That has a negative effect on estimates."

Shares of Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) rose 3.7% in morning trading, to $232.54.

Bezos also unveiled a new version of Amazon's classic e-ink Kindle, now called the Kindle Touch. The new version lacks a keyboard -- a first for Amazon -- and is smaller and lighter than past models.

"One of the things about building a purpose-driven device for reading is that you can obsess over the details that are important for readers," Bezos said.

The Kindle Touch will cost $99 for a Wi-Fi-only version, a sharp drop from the Kindle's previous $139 entry-level price tag -- or $114 for a version with sponsored ads. A Kindle Touch 3G, with free cellular service, will cost $149. Both begin shipping November 21.

Bezos had one more Kindle on offer: A stripped-down, entry-level version priced at $79, which began shipping on Wednesday. That Kindle -- Amazon's tiniest, weighing in at less than 6 ounces -- carries sponsored ads. A $109 version is available without the ads.

The tablet battlefield: If Amazon can unseat Apple as the tablet king -- or even make a dent, really -- it will have pulled off a victory where other power players have failed.

In the most extreme example, HP (HPQ, Fortune 500) killed off its TouchPad last month after just 49 days on the market. Other rivals are hanging on, but most of their devices have flopped critically and commercially.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIMM) released its PlayBook tablet in April to harsh reviews criticizing the device's unfinished feel. A major software update is due out soon, which RIM says will fix some of version one's flaws.

Two Android-based tablets -- Samsung's Galaxy Tab and Motorola's (MMI) Xoom -- debuted at prices above the iPad's $499 price point. Their sales have disappointed.

And so the iPad has remained largely the only game in town. A report last month from R.W. Baird said that about 93% of current tablet users are iPad owners, and 94% of potential buyers are looking at the iPad.

Meanwhile, analysts have been dialing back their forecasts about the tablet market's diversity. Earlier this year, IHS iSuppli predicted that Apple's tablet market share would drop below 50% in late 2012. Last month, the firm backpedaled and said that won't happen until 2014.

Tatas Rs. 2000 Cr. Rental Project

Tata Group's realty arm Tata Housing Development Company has joined hands with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to invest Rs 2,000-crore for a rental housing project near the metropolis.

"We plan to launch a large rental housing project near Mumbai before Diwali. We have got approvals for the project from the MMRDA," Tata Housing Development Company Managing Director and Chief Executive Brotin Banerjee told PTI.

However, Banerjee declined to reveal the time-line and exact investment in the project.

According to sources, that the investment would be around Rs 2,000-crore.

The project will come up on a 25-acre land between Thane and Bhiwandi, in the neighbourhood of the city, and is expected to be ready in three to four years, sources said.

NRIs return back home

Faced with declining salaries and job cuts abroad, an increasing number of NRI professionals are moving back to India in search of greener pastures, a move that will give homegrown companies the chance to target this attractive resource pool.

According to a study by MyHiringClub.com, a recruitment tendering platform, hiring of non-resident Indians (NRIs) will account for 19 percent of total recruitment activity during October-December this year, compared to 11 percent in the year-ago period, representing a growth of 8 percent.

Hiring of NRIs accounted for 21 percent of total recruitment activity during April-June, 2011.

"The high economic growth in India, with many good opportunities, has fuelled the NRI thought process to head back. In addition to that, many Indian companies are shutting their offices in the West," MyHiringClub.com CEO Rajesh Kumar said.

However, "It is not only the major crisis in the West, but also a combination of economic, social and other factors that has driven this," he said.

The segments that will witness the maximum NRI recruitment during the period under review include IT and ITES, followed by automobiles, manufacturing and engineering, banking and financial services, infrastructure, telecom, FMCG and retail.

The survey, conducted among 429 corporate and 710 recruitment consultants, said appointment of NRIs will rise by 9 percent in the IT and ITES space during the third quarter of the 2012 fiscal vis-a-vis the year-ago period.

Similarly, hiring in the automobiles, manufacturing and engineering sector will grow by 8 percent, while NRI recruitment will be up 4 percent in the banking and financial services space.

He was admitted to the Lilavati hospital on Friday night after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Also, Google Wallet over-the-air updates to Nexus S smartphones are going slowly and the app did not reach all users by late Friday, when Google had said last week the update would be rolled out.

A Google Help Desk representative named Dave said via phone on Saturday at 7:36 a.m. (ET): "The [Google Wallet] rollout is kind of a slow rollout. They are still working on that. There's no specific time frame for when it will be complete. You should see it soon."

Computerworld called the Help Desk to see why a Nexus S phone in hand had not received the Google Wallet by Friday night, four days after Google Wallet was officially launched .

Two Google spokespeople were asked to comment on the status of the rollout and the wait times for adding cards to Google Wallet, but did not respond as of mid-day Saturday.

A Google spokeswoman had said Wednesday, that "100 percent of users should have the update by EOD Friday" after earlier saying the update would be completed on Wednesday.

Google launched Google Wallet last week, saying there would be an over-the-air rollout of the Google Wallet app and that the service was "now available on Nexus S 4G on Sprint."

A Sprint spokesperson referred inquiries about the rollout to Google. Other partners in the venture could not be reached to comment.

Lengthy wireless software rollouts are common, usually taking several days so networks won't get jammed, analysts said. Google and various Android smartphone wireless carriers have come under fire for requiring Android OS version updates, but mainly for promising the rollouts would start at a certain time and then delaying the start of the rollout.

Analysts questioned how serious the delay really is, and how many users are already connected. They also questioned whether the wait times for adding credit cards could be a sign of a bigger problem with the complex network, systems and the money exchange infrastructure behind Google Wallet.

The Google Wallet Web site first posted a notice on Wednesday of the problem in adding credit cards to the app, the same notice that was still live today.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to limit the number of SMS sent per day from a mobile phone to 100. While the measure has been taken to curb spammers who bombard users with unwanted SMS about topics ranging from hair loss to real-estate deals, it is the innocent SMS junkies who will suffer the most.

The move will not affect those who prefer making calls over sending SMS, but it will certainly mean a higher mobile bill for those who depend more on SMS. TRAI has argued that there are not many mobile subscribers who send more than 100 SMS per day, and hence this measure is not counter-productive. It is a well-known fact that TRAI has not been very successful with the DND (Do Not Disturb) facility to keep pesky telemarketing calls at bay, and with several websites offering free SMS facilities, we won't be surprised if this move also fails in a similar manner.
